They suggest machines that think like us and might one day replace us. I defend an idea that may surprise you: AI is neither truly intelligent nor truly artificial. Understanding this changes how Africa should approach it.

Not intelligent

A large language model has read billions of texts. It has learned to predict, word by word, the most likely continuation of a sentence. The result is often impressive. But this machine has never seen a mango tree or smelled rain on red earth. It can state an error with perfect confidence. It is a power of calculation and imitation, extraordinary and alien at the same time.

Not artificial

AI is deeply human and deeply material.

It is made of us: it learned by reading what billions of people have written.

It is made by hands: thousands of workers, many of them in Africa, label the data and correct the answers.

It is made of earth: copper, cobalt, lithium and tantalum, often mined from African soil.

It is made of energy and water: data centres consume enormous amounts to run and to cool down.

What Africa should take from this

AI is human intelligence outsourced, accumulated and industrialised. Africa is already part of it: through its minerals, its workers, and its users whose data feeds the machines. But it is present wherever little money is made, and almost nowhere the big money is made. It is the old pattern of cocoa versus chocolate, cobalt versus the smartphone.

There is no magic. There is data, labour, energy, minerals and brains. And Africa has all of these resources.

For leaders, the conclusion is practical: invest in data, in skills and in energy, and require that part of the value produced on our soil stays on our soil.

AI is made of our texts, invisible hands, African minerals and energy.
