Training a next-generation model costs more than 500 million dollars. The researchers, engineers and annotators who improve these models receive almost nothing of the value they create. For Africa, it is the story of cocoa versus chocolate, applied to intelligence.

I designed Ankh AI to offer another path: an open protocol where compute, talent and data come together to produce AI models owned by everyone and controlled by no one. The name comes from the ankh, the Egyptian symbol of life.

Three pillars, one coordination layer

Compute: from professional data centres to individuals with a gaming graphics card, anyone can contribute computing power. Distributed training relies on DiLoCo-style protocols designed for low-bandwidth networks.

Talent: researchers, engineers, annotators and security auditors contribute and are rewarded according to the real usefulness of their work. Their reputation is recorded in non-transferable Soulbound Tokens.

Data: data providers keep a record of their contributions and receive programmable royalties for as long as the model uses them.

Trust without intermediaries

How can you check that a node really did the work it promised? Ankh AI combines three mechanisms: zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) for inference, optimistic verification with a challenge window, and random sampling of tasks. Everything runs on a dedicated blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK, and governance is handed to a DAO.

Why this is an African project

In Les Bâtisseurs d’Intelligences, I argue that Africa must produce its own intelligence instead of consuming everyone else’s. Ankh AI is a technical answer: a student in Douala, a lab in Nairobi or an engineer in the diaspora can take part in building a foundation model and share in its value. It is also a concrete way to build the African large language model I call for.

The full white paper (71 pages, in French) and the research article (in English) are available for download:

Ankh AI: A Decentralized Protocol for Collaborative Artificial Intelligence (PDF, EN)

Ankh AI white paper v1.0 (PDF, FR)

Researchers, developers, compute operators, partners: write to me to join the project.

Compute, talent and data coordinated by a dedicated blockchain: introducing Ankh AI, a decentralised collaborative AI protocol, with its white paper and research article.

[4

post-31","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-english
["GET
